Reason I joined WiSH: This is an inspiring group of students and faculty advisors with diverse interests and backgrounds, all united by a passion for harm reduction and advancing care for people with substance use disorders. WiSH presents an incredible opportunity to work as a team toward helping fill major gaps in access to patient-centered care and harm reduction-oriented medical education. I'm fortunate to help lead the group's efforts in providing low-barrier, patient-centered care through our student-run WiSH Clinic, as well as our education innovations, community engagement initiatives, and impactful research projects.

Carlos graduated from Hamilton College in 2010 where he majored in chemical physics. For graduate studies, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Thomas Sakmar at the Rockefeller University as part of the tri-institutional training program in chemical biology. To support his research efforts, Carlos was awarded the NSF graduate research fellowship in 2012 and received his Ph.D. in 2017. He joined Weill Cornell Medicine as a medical student in 2020. He is interested in addiction psychiatry and improving health care access to underserved communities.

Why WiSH: During my gap years, I moved to Italy on Fulbright Scholarship to study alternative treatment models for substance use disorder at the Community of San Patrignano. I was ignited by this experience learning from and working with individuals in recovery from substance use and found a profound sense of humanity and resilience among these individuals. Now, as I pursue a career in medicine, I am eager to continue working with this patient population and learn more about harm reduction model while upholding the dignity and individuality of every person who injects drugs. In my role as community partnership co-coordinator, I’m excited to get in contact with and involved in the various organizations throughout the city with the hopes of bringing their strategies and experience to WiSH for our improvement as our clinic takes off the ground!

Reason for Joining: I became involved with WiSH my 1st year because everyone deserves access to quality, patient-centered healthcare regardless of substance use. I love that WiSH was specifically designed to provide services that this population wants and can benefit from. As director of Community Engagement, I want to integrate WiSH with the strong, cutting-edge harm reduction community in NYC.

Reason for Joining: My interest to be a part of the board of WiSH was sparked because of my previous experience in addiction recovery clinics in Ithaca which fueled my passion for awareness and interest in addiction medicine. At Weill Cornell, I wanted to find a way to make impactful change for this community. Through WiSH, I can help the clinic directly benefit those struggling with substance abuse and addiction in the NYC community (my hometown).
